By creating paintings, drawings, digital drawings, and tabletop games, I explore the intersection between agency and chance as they apply to self-determination, and the concept of home.
Imagery such as houses, moving boxes, and shifting landscapes show homes in flux. This provides space to reflect on the idea of “house” vs. “home,” permanence vs. impermanence, displacement, family, and childhood vs. adulthood. “Home” encompasses socioeconomic and environmental factors that influence where we live, as well as the feeling of displacement.
Inventing new games as a game designer (both how they work, the materials, and the graphic design) leans into the metaphor of making the most with the hand of cards you are dealt. The interplay of visual iconography, signs, interactive tactile components, and player psychology is equally fascinating. They are interactive social experiences with concepts related to my paintings, a form of participatory art. Art historical connections include Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings, which provide instructions for others to execute, and Joseph Cornell’s assemblages of found objects inside boxes. She is indebted to Marcel Duchamp for his impact on art and his passion for chess.
